Stock Market Recap — July 20, 2026

Wall Street began the week cautiously as investors balanced escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East against what could become one of the most important weeks of earnings season.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished essentially flat, giving back early gains as semiconductor stocks weakened once again.

The market’s focus is increasingly shifting from AI spending to AI profits.

After months of extraordinary investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, investors now want evidence that those billions of dollars are translating into stronger earnings and growing cash flow.

That question will begin to receive answers this week.

Alphabet, Tesla, Intel, and IBM are all scheduled to report earnings over the next few days. Their results could determine whether the next leg of the AI bull market is driven by expanding profits—or slowed by lofty expectations.

Middle East Tensions Return

Geopolitics once again influenced markets.

The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified over the weekend following additional U.S. military strikes and Iranian retaliation against U.S. allies in the region.

Oil markets reacted immediately.

Brent crude briefly touched $90 per barrel before retreating as traders concluded that global oil supplies remain adequate despite the growing conflict.

The fact that oil failed to hold those gains may be one of today’s most encouraging developments.

It suggests markets are becoming more confident that alternative shipping routes and increased production elsewhere could limit longer-term supply disruptions.

Semiconductors Pause Again

Chip stocks remained under pressure.

The recent correction in semiconductors reflects a market that has become increasingly demanding.

It’s no longer enough to announce massive AI spending.

Investors want measurable returns.

Higher revenues.

Expanding margins.

Growing free cash flow.

The companies reporting earnings this week will likely determine whether semiconductor stocks resume their leadership—or continue consolidating after one of the strongest rallies in market history.

The Week Ahead

This could become one of the most important weeks of the summer.

Investors will closely watch:

  • Alphabet earnings
  • Tesla earnings
  • Intel earnings
  • IBM earnings
  • Additional developments in the Middle East
  • Oil prices

After several weeks dominated by geopolitical headlines, the market may finally return its attention to what ultimately matters most:

Corporate earnings.

Long-term investors should remember that while wars, oil prices, and daily headlines can influence markets in the short run, sustainable earnings growth remains the foundation of long-term stock performance.
