068 Is anyone fighting for the little guy? Yes, Rob Carrick

Rob Carrick has been a journalist for the Globe and Mail newspaper for the past 20 years.

Rob Carrick

In his column, he asks the same questions that a regular (non-finance) guy would, and then he uses his expertise and contacts to find the answer. In his articles, I get the impression that Rob Carrick is willing to fight for the little guy and the he can’t be bought.

In my opinion, he’s the best personal finance journalist in Canada. I never feel that he has a hidden agenda or that he’s trying to sell me product/service. I feel that his true motive is to help me make better financial decisions and to protect me from the avalanche of misleading information out there.

Remarkable events in Rob’s career

  1. The year 2000-2001 financial crisis, when all the technological stocks, went down, in particular, Nortel, the darling of the TSX.
  2. The 2008 financial crisis when real estate prices tumbled and the U.S. market lost about 50% of its value.

Other highlights

  • Owning a home is not necessarily the best investment you can make with your money.
  • People haven’t caught on with the Index Funds and ETF revolution because financial advisers have a financial incentive to keep the public on higher cost/fees mutual funds so that they (the advisors) can make money through commissions.
  • Social media and smartphones have increased the ways advertisers can influence us to buy more stuff. Canadians are suffering by getting too much into debt.
  • When it comes to retirement, Rob thinks the baby boomers will do just fine, but he’s worried about the millennial generation.
  • Rob thinks that people are slowly educating themselves about personal finance.
