Seafood does not always get the attention it deserves. It can feel a bit like a special occasion choice to make, rather than something you’d casually throw into your weekly meals or your meal plan, especially in the cost of living crisis. But once you start bringing more seafood into the mix, you’ll realise it’s actually one of the easiest ways to make your meals feel fresher, lighter and a lot more interesting.
Take something like a snow crab, for example. It’s delicate, it’s slightly sweet, and it feels really indulgent without being overly heavy. This is the kind of charm that seafood and shellfish in general brings to the table. Literally. It manages to feel like a treat while still being surprisingly good for you. One of the biggest reasons to eat more seafood is how light it feels compared to other proteins. You know those meals that leave you feeling sluggish afterwards, especially red meat. Seafood really does that.

You don’t have to get too technical about it. The simple version is that it’s a really good way to support your overall well-being without overthinking the diet. It’s also so easy and quick to cook. It might look intimidating, especially in lobster and snow crabs and other shellfish, but most options take just a few minutes, which is perfect when you don’t feel like spending too long in the kitchen. A little seasoning, a squeeze of lemon, maybe some butter or olive oil, and you’ve got something that tastes really good without much effort.
It’s also incredibly versatile. You can keep things simple with grilled fish and vegetables, or you can go for something a bit more fun like tacos, pasta or a seafood platter to share. It works just as well for a quiet night in as it does for when you’ve got people over and want to put something slightly different on the table. And then let’s not forget about variety. There is so much that you can choose from with prawns, salmon, cod, mussels, crab, so it’s very easy to mix things up and avoid getting bored. Every type has its own flavour and texture, which keeps things interesting without needing to reinvent your whole approach to cooking.
Eating more seafood doesn’t mean you have to make massive changes to your budget or even to your diet, but you want to just add something a little bit lighter, a bit fresher, and a bit more enjoyable to your meals. Having something indulgent like snow crab or lobster once a week is really going to change how you look at food. Don’t forget that food is an experience, and it’s all about the experience, right? Once you start, you might find it becomes less of an occasional choice and more of a regular favorite, and your meals will probably be better for it too.
