How do I prepare to talk to the camera

Oral communication has never been my strong point. I am the kind of person who rathers listens and nods in agreement when someone else is speaking, with the occasional question and voiced out agreement (yah? Really? Why? Nooo!) to show that I am actively listening.

For that matter, I have never been good at writing communication either, but that’s a topic for another day.

What makes my communication even more challenging, is that English is not my first language and I have never been able to stop second-guessing myself.

For all those reasons, it might seem weird that some of my biggest dreams/goals are to be a full-time blogger, YouTuber, and podcaster.

I feel that I have a message to share and I want to share it, despite my shortcomings.

So today, I will share with you how I prepare to do a video and talk in front of the camera.

  1. Writing a script. It sounds obvious, but I have done this mistake many times, I  shouldn’t just get in front of the camera and start winging it. The results are not good. The problem is that I compare myself with other people who I see in other videos, and they seem to be so natural and off the cuff, but what I neglect to see is that many of them have put hour or years to look so natural. And of course, for most of them, English is their first language.
  2. Read the script many times, with the same energy and enthusiasm as I would do it when doing the real take.
  3. Rework any line or words that don’t sound right. Make sure that the script sounds conversational. We want to avoid any formal words. The written language is always a bit different than the spoken language.
  4. This is the time to experiment. Try to put emphasis on different words. See what better resonates with the audience.
  5. The final step is to lock it down. Once you have decided on a text, don’t do any more edits. Just look at the camera lens and press record.
  6. If you have the luxury of time, record it several times. Every time you do it, it will be a bit better.
