164 How To Get A Job During COVID-19, Carla Marrouche

Carla Marrouche is a corporate recruiter, she works for Brother’s Canada. She shares with us her insights about the job market and what applicants should be doing to increase their chances of finding a job.

Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date

Not having a LinkedIn profile doesn’t mean you get disqualified, but those who do have a profile, they are giving way more information to the recruiter, and thus creating a deeper connection and thus, it increases the chances of being chosen.

A personal website helps

The information you can put on your CV and on your LinkedIn profile is limited. Think that an employer is investing a lot of time and money on their candidate. It’s natural that they would like to have as much information as possible. Are you a team player? Do you have other activities going on? Employers feel swayed by people who walk the extra mile to get the job.

What do employers look for when looking at an application

If the applicant’s qualifications match at least 40% of the job’s requirements, then she continues looking at the application.

Carla Marrouche discourages applicant from using the same generic CV for all the positions they are applying for. Each CV should be costume made for the position they are looking for.

Also, they should have keywords in their CV in relation to the position they are seeking. Many companies use a scanner to look for keywords before the resume is read by a human.

Look for transferable skills that you can carry from one industry to the other

There are always some skills that you can carry from one job to the other, sometimes you have to rename them to reflect the new position, or the use to the new company. That’s why each resume should be tailored for the position sought after.

What are some deal-breakers when going for a job interview

  1. Not showing a willingness to learn and adapt to different situations.
  2. There is a fine line between being confident and being arrogant and not willing to take criticism or tips for improvement.
  3. Asking for a high salary.

How to prepare for a Zoom job interview

Recruiters miss many communication cues when doing an interview through Zoom or any other video conference tool, but as an interviewee, you would like to make the most with what you have.

The best thing is to get familiarized with the platform. Make sure you have good light, good sound, a professional-looking background, and if possible do a couple of mock-up meetings with your friends or with a coach to get used to the platform.

Do organizations in Canada require a diploma

There is a new tendency followed by big organizations such as Google and Apple, to stop asking for college diplomas as a requirement for a job.

Canada is still a lager in this initiative. However, if a candidate can demonstrate, though previous job experiences, that they have the knowledge to get the job done, yes, there is an opportunity for that candidate to get hired, without a diploma. But let’s face it, a diploma serves as a signal to the employer that the candidate has some training. Without a diploma, a candidate would have to get an equivalent signal to show their knowledge and capabilities.

Good preparation can give you an advantage

The most qualified candidate isn’t always the one that gets the job. Even if you’re less qualified for a position than others, being prepared can set you apart. If you have a great attitude, a positive image, if you have good communication skills, the interviewer can determine that you are a better fit for the company culture than someone with more qualifications.
