An Unreasonable Man

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”–George Bernard Shaw

Today, I would like to give praise to the founder of Toastmasters International, Ralph C. Smedley.

Mr. Smedley first tried to open a public speaking club in 1903. He tried year after year, for 21 years, until in 1924 his club was successful.

Mr. Smedley was not a reasonable man. In spite of so many years of failure, he never gave up.

Today Toastmasters International has over 350,000 members, It’s in 140 countries, and it has more than 16,000 clubs.

Thank you, Ralph C. Smedley, for being an unreasonable man.

Are you an unreasonable person?

What are you doing that might seem unreasonable to other people?

For me, it’s my podcast. I have been doing it for 23 months. People ask me why am I doing it. I respond: For my own pleasure, to get to talk to people who I respect and admire. Yes, I know, I am being unreasonable. How about you?
