Something remarkable is happening in AI entrepreneurship.

For most of economic history, building a serious company required capital, employees, offices, equipment and specialized expertise. Even a small software company might need programmers, designers, marketers, customer-support representatives and administrators.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to change that equation.

A single entrepreneur can now use AI for programming, research, writing, design, marketing, customer service, data analysis and administrative work.

The result may be one of the biggest economic consequences of artificial intelligence:

We may be entering the age of the one-person multi-million dollar company.

AI Entrepreneurship Dramatically Lowers the Cost of Starting a Company

One of the most important effects of AI is that it dramatically reduces the cost of experimenting with a business idea.

Imagine that you wanted to launch a software product 15 years ago.

You might have needed to hire programmers, a graphic designer and someone to create your website. You might have needed marketing people just to find your first customers.

Today, an entrepreneur can describe an application in ordinary language and have AI help build it.

The same entrepreneur can ask AI to:

  • Research competitors.
  • Analyze an industry.
  • Create a website.
  • Write software.
  • Design a logo.
  • Create advertisements.
  • Write sales emails.
  • Analyze customer feedback.
  • Answer support questions.
  • Create financial projections.
  • Produce social media content.
  • Automate repetitive administrative work.

This doesn’t mean all those tasks can be performed perfectly without human supervision.

But they can often be performed faster and at dramatically lower cost.

That changes the economics of entrepreneurship.

Million-Dollar One-Person Companies Are Already Here

This isn’t entirely theoretical.

A 2026 analysis reported by The Wall Street Journal found thousands of solo operators generating more than $1 million in revenue.

Even more interesting, the number of solo operators exceeding $1 million more than doubled between 2023 and 2025. The number exceeding $5 million and $10 million nearly tripled.

One extraordinary example is entrepreneur Ben Broca.

Broca created an AI company that provides tools for entrepreneurs. By July 2026, he had around 10,000 paying customers and was reportedly on track for approximately $10 million in annual revenue.

Number of employees?

One: himself.

AI helps him answer emails, write and debug software, handle customer requests, onboard subscribers and process refunds.

There are also fascinating examples of extremely small teams.

Lovable, an AI software-building company, crossed $400 million in annual recurring revenue with only 146 full-time employees — roughly $2.7 million in ARR per employee.

Cursor, another AI coding company, reportedly surpassed a $2 billion annualized revenue run rate in 2026.

These aren’t literally one-person companies, but they demonstrate an important change: economic output is becoming less tightly connected to the number of employees.

AI Is Becoming the Entrepreneur’s First Employee

Perhaps the most interesting evidence comes from OpenAI’s small-business research.

OpenAI reported in May 2026 that at least four million Americans used ChatGPT during March 2026 to help plan, start, run or grow a business.

The company described AI as increasingly becoming the small-business owner’s “first hire.”

I think that’s an excellent way to understand what is happening.

Instead of thinking about ChatGPT as software, imagine it as the first member of your company.

Then add specialized AI tools and agents.

Suddenly, one human entrepreneur could become the CEO of dozens — and eventually perhaps hundreds — of AI agents.

Don’t Just Add AI to Existing Businesses

One of the least interesting approaches to AI entrepreneurship is taking an existing product and adding a chatbot.

The much more interesting question is:

What businesses become possible now that intelligence itself is becoming cheap?

That’s a radically different question.

Accounting, legal services, healthcare administration, insurance, customer support, marketing, education and software development contain enormous amounts of cognitive labor.

Entrepreneurs can reconsider these industries from first principles.

Instead of asking:

“How could I add AI to an accounting firm?”

Ask:

“If I were creating an accounting service today and AI could perform 80% of the repetitive work, what would that company look like?”

That mental shift can produce entirely new business models.

Questions You Can Ask AI to Discover Business Opportunities

You don’t have to be a Silicon Valley entrepreneur to participate.

Start with what you already know.

If you have spent 10 or 20 years working in restaurants, real estate, construction, accounting, dancing, insurance or another industry, you probably understand problems that an AI engineer doesn’t even know exist.

Try asking AI questions such as:

  1. “What repetitive tasks in [my industry] consume the most employee time?”
  2. “What problems do customers in [industry] repeatedly complain about?”
  3. “What services in this industry cost $500 or more but consist primarily of information processing?”
  4. “Which tasks in [industry] could AI automate today but most businesses are still doing manually?”
  5. “Give me 20 businesses that one person with my experience in [field] could operate using AI.”
  6. “What business normally requires five employees that I might be able to operate alone with AI?”
  7. “What expensive service could I offer more cheaply by combining my expertise with AI?”
  8. “Interview me about my skills and experience, then suggest 10 AI-assisted businesses I could realistically start.”

That last question may be particularly powerful.

Your greatest entrepreneurial advantage might not be knowing AI.

It might be knowing something else extremely well and learning how to apply AI to it.

A Roadmap for Starting a One-Person AI Business

You don’t need to begin by quitting your job or investing your life savings.

AI entrepreneurship makes experimentation cheap. Take advantage of that.

Step 1: Start with a problem

Don’t ask, “What AI company should I create?”

Ask, “What annoying or expensive problem can I solve?”

Technology isn’t the business. Solving the problem is the business.

Step 2: Look at what you already know

Make an inventory of your skills, professional experience, hobbies, relationships and industry knowledge.

Your experience gives you insights outsiders don’t have.

Step 3: Use AI as your research department

Ask AI to investigate the problem, competitors, potential customers, pricing and existing solutions.

Then verify important conclusions independently.

Step 4: Talk to humans

This step becomes even more important in the AI age.

Talk to 10 potential customers.

Ask them what frustrates them, what they currently pay for, what wastes their time and what problems they desperately want solved.

Step 5: Build the smallest possible solution

Don’t spend a year creating a company.

Create the smallest product or service somebody might actually pay for.

AI can help you build the website, prototype, marketing materials and even software.

Step 6: Get one customer

Forget about becoming a millionaire.

Get one person to pay you.

Then ask why that person bought.

Step 7: Get 10 customers

Now patterns begin appearing.

What do customers request repeatedly? What questions do they ask? What parts of delivering your service consume your time?

Step 8: Automate repetitive work

This is where AI becomes powerful.

Gradually turn repetitive tasks into AI workflows and agents.

You remain responsible for judgment, relationships and important decisions while machines increasingly handle execution.

Step 9: Scale without automatically hiring

Traditional businesses often respond to growth by hiring another employee.

The AI entrepreneur can ask a different question:

“Can I redesign or automate this process before hiring someone?”

Sometimes the answer will be no, and hiring a human will be the correct decision.

But increasingly, the answer may be yes.

AI Makes Entrepreneurs Extraordinarily Productive

This is the part of the AI revolution that fascinates me most because I have experienced it personally.

Since incorporating AI into my work, my productivity has probably doubled or tripled, while the quality of what I produce has increased dramatically — perhaps tenfold in some areas.

I can research subjects, organize ideas, analyze information, brainstorm, edit, write and solve technical problems at a speed that would have seemed impossible only a few years ago.

I’m still doing the thinking.

But I’m no longer thinking alone.

AI functions like a researcher, editor, programmer, brainstorming partner and assistant sitting beside me.

Multiply that productivity improvement across millions of entrepreneurs and the economic implications become enormous.

Yes, AI Will Destroy Some Jobs

We shouldn’t pretend otherwise.

Some tasks currently performed by humans will almost certainly be automated.

But we’ve seen versions of this story before.

Mechanization eliminated enormous amounts of agricultural labor. Factories automated manual work. Computers eliminated countless clerical tasks. The internet disrupted travel agencies, newspapers, retail stores and many other industries.

Yet those technologies also created occupations that previously didn’t exist.

AI will probably do the same.

We may see entirely new jobs such as:

  • AI workflow designers.
  • AI agent managers.
  • AI auditors.
  • AI trainers and evaluators.
  • AI compliance specialists.
  • Human-AI collaboration consultants.
  • AI implementation specialists for small businesses.
  • Synthetic-media producers.
  • AI-powered independent researchers.
  • AI tutors and education designers.
  • Specialists who verify AI-generated information.
  • Entrepreneurs operating fleets of specialized AI agents.

And there will probably be thousands of occupations we cannot imagine today.

Imagine explaining “YouTube creator,” “SEO specialist,” “Uber driver” or “app developer” to somebody in 1985.

The jobs created by AI may sound equally strange today.

The Scarce Resource May No Longer Be the Ability to Build

This creates another profound change.

Historically, ideas were cheap and implementation was expensive.

You could have a brilliant idea for software, but without capital and programmers, the idea wasn’t worth much.

AI is gradually reversing that equation.

Building is becoming easier.

Therefore, knowing what to build becomes more valuable.

The scarce skills of the future may be:

  • Identifying worthwhile problems.
  • Understanding customers.
  • Exercising good judgment.
  • Recognizing opportunities.
  • Having specialized domain expertise.
  • Earning trust.
  • Selling.
  • Building an audience.
  • Distributing products.

Programming ability will remain valuable.

But knowing exactly what customers desperately need may become even more valuable.

The More Artificial Our World Becomes, the More Valuable Humans Become

There’s also a social dimension to this revolution.

AI allows us to work remotely, communicate electronically and spend enormous amounts of time interacting with machines.

I experience this myself.

I spend most of my working day at home in front of a computer screen.

And perhaps ironically, that makes my evenings around people more valuable.

I go to my favorite dance club and dance salsa and bachata. I talk to people. I laugh. I make new acquaintances. I reconnect with friends.

No chatbot replaces that.

As digital intelligence becomes abundant, genuine human interaction may become a scarce luxury.

And human relationships remain extraordinarily important economically as well.

Ideas emerge from conversations.

Customers come through relationships.

Partnerships develop through trust.

Opportunities often appear because somebody knows somebody.

The entrepreneur of the future shouldn’t spend his entire life talking to machines.

The New Kind of Entrepreneur

For decades, we measured successful companies partly by their size.

“How many employees do you have?”

That question may become increasingly meaningless.

Perhaps a better question will be:

“How much value does your company create?”

A 2026 case study offers a glimpse of what’s possible. One experienced software engineer supported by four AI agents completed a project originally scoped for a four-person team — in half the planned time — while reducing direct staffing costs by more than 85%.

But there is an important caution.

Research examining more than 160,000 Product Hunt launches found that generative AI has substantially increased solo entrepreneurship, while teams still tended to dominate the highest-performing projects.

So the one-person billion-dollar company hasn’t been proven yet.

And perhaps it never will be.

But that’s almost beside the point.

You don’t need to build a billion-dollar company.

A one-person company generating $100,000, $500,000 or $1 million while providing enormous autonomy to its owner would already represent an extraordinary economic transformation.

AI has dramatically lowered the price of experimentation.

The programmer can be AI-assisted.

The researcher can be AI-assisted.

The designer can be AI-assisted.

The marketer can be AI-assisted.

The customer-service representative can be AI-assisted.

And increasingly, some of these functions can be performed by autonomous agents.

But somebody still needs to decide what should be built.

Somebody needs to understand the customer.

Somebody needs judgment.

Somebody needs to take the risk.

That’s the entrepreneur.

The greatest opportunity created by artificial intelligence may not be replacing human beings.

It may be giving individual human beings more economic power than they have ever had before.
