When you run a business, you need to make sure that you are aware of the importance of safety, and that you are doing all you can to really make it work as well as possible. This is something that you need to keep at the forefront of what you do, otherwise you might struggle to actually look after your people and your visitors and contractors too. It’s the kind of thing that can cause a lot of problems for a business if you don’t focus on it, so it’s vital that you do.

Understand Your Obligations
As a business owner, you do have certain obligations that you need to be aware of and to make sure you are fulfilling. These are legal requirements that you really can’t overlook, and which are going to be necessary for you to think about if you are going to be able to keep within the law as effectively as possible. A lot of the time, you will probably find that these are also ethical or moral imperatives too, so it’s something that you should really be aware of in that sense as well.
Ignorance is not a defense when it comes to any of this, including workplace safety laws, health, fire, environmental issues and so on. You should ensure that someone in your team, or a consultant perhaps, is responsible for keeping up with changes in legislation, and that you are happy with entrusting that person with what needs to be done here.

Carry Out Risk Assessments
You need to carry out a risk assessment for the workplace as a whole, as well as for each major task that takes place within that workplace. This can take some time, but it is a necessary process that you have to go through. For this you will need to use a pre-existing system to be able to identify potential risks, and potential hazards, and then figure out a logical and reasonable plan to be able to deal with them as effectively as possible.
It’s all about evaluating the potential risk of anything happening, and then finding reasonable means of reducing that risk to as close to zero as possible. You also need to document all of this, and it needs to be visible and available to staff at all times. As well as being a legal requirement, this is also just a great way to ensure that you are keeping everyone safe, so it’s certainly something you’ll want to think about.
Put In Controls
It’s important after this that you are putting in whatever controls might be necessary or important, as these are going to be hugely powerful when it comes to being able to deal with those hazards that you have identified. There are actually five different control levels that you can use in a hierarchy form here, and they are well worth knowing if you want to do it right.
First of all you have elimination, which means removing the hazard entirely. That is always the best option if it is possible to achieve – it could be as simple as choosing not to do a task that isn’t strictly necessary for the running of the operation, for example. Next up you have substitution, which means replacing something with something else that is less hazardous, and often that is a highly effective method as well.

After that it’s down to engineering controls, which can include physical barriers like handrails and manhole sewer covers, and incorporating better design for things which might already be in place as well. After that you have administrative controls, which means things like rules being put in place, training being offered and scheduling being used, and so on. And then you have the use of personal protective equipment, or PPE, which should be the last line of defense.

Build A Safety Culture
A lot of this does end up coming down to safety, and it’s important that you are going to build a culture that is reflecting that. If you can do that, you are going to find that you are really going to notice a huge difference to how it affects your people. Leadership must commit visibly to safety in your teams if you are going to make this work, and it’s something that you need to think about in terms of tone.
This includes the need to train employees not just once but regularly, and to make sure that you are including refreshers. Make sure they know what to do and why it matters, and what is expected of them in each situation. If you can do that well enough, you’ll find that it really does make a huge difference to how the business is going to fare, so this is something that you will find hugely important to consider.
