Why Trade Shows Still Matter in a Digital World

Why Trade Shows Still Matter in a Digital World

It can really feel that everything in business and to do with business has gone online – you have meetings via video calls, marketing is all on social media, and entire sales processes can even happen without anyone ever being in the same room as each other, and because of that, people might just assume in-person events are less important than they used to be.

But the truth is things like trade shows can really make a difference, and they still attract lots of businesses and visitors, so with that in mind, let’s take a look at why trade shows still matter in a digital world.

Seeing Products Properly

One of the best things about trade shows is that people can actually experience products in a way that just isn’t possible online – photos and videos are useful, of course, but they’re never quite the same as seeing something up close.

If a company sells equipment, materials, or any other physical product, a show allows visitors to handle them, test them, and ask questions right away, and even service-based businesses can benefit because it helps explain ideas and solutions in a much more practical way.

Conversations Happen Naturally

Online communication isn’t really real – you can think about emails and plan them out, you schedule meetings so you know what’s going to be said, and even phone calls can follow a script, but at a trade show, conversations happen a lot more naturally. For example, someone might stop at a stand out of curiosity, ask a quick question, and end up having a longer discussion that leads to a new opportunity.

Those types of fairly spontaneous interactions are hard to recreate online because when you communicate digitally, you usually plan it out, and in the end, sometimes the most valuable connections come from those random meetings.

Understanding The Industry

Another reason trade shows are still relevant is that they give businesses a chance to see a bigger picture when it comes to their specific industry – or even a closely connected one.

When you walk through an exhibition hall you can see what your competitors are doing, what new products are appearing, and what trends people are talking about, so it’s basically a fantastic way to get a snapshot of the market at a particular moment in time. And for business owners and decision makers, that kind of insight can be massively useful because it helps them understand where their company fits and where things might be heading next.

They Work Alongside Digital Marketing

The interesting thing is that trade shows don’t replace digital marketing, but they do work with it, and the two can complement one another perfectly.

Businesses might use social media or email campaigns, for example, and use them to invite visitors to their stand, or they might share live updates from the event. And afterwards, the contacts they made at the show can easily continue the conversation online. So in that way, in-person events and digital tools actually support each other and can be used at the same time.
