Understanding Employee Rights and Responsibilities in the Workplace

Understanding Employee Rights and Responsibilities in the Workplace

Every job comes with its own risks, whether it’s a significant risk or an everyday risk that’s present in any working or home environment.

Knowing these risks is one thing, but if you were to ever get injured within the workplace, it’s important to know what your rights are as an employee, your own responsibilities, and those of the employer who employs you.

A right to fair treatment

Fair treatment should be something that every employee should get, regardless of who they are and where they come from, as well as the position they hold in the business.

Employees have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. They shouldn’t be subjected to workplace bullying, harassment, or discrimination of any kind.

Should that happen, an employee has every right to take up the relevant processes needed to get justice for being treated unfairly in the workplace.

Safety within the work environment

Employers are under a legal obligation to ensure the workplace where employees work is safe and that all employees receive the necessary training to keep them and those around them safe from harm.

It’s therefore useful to speak to a work injury advisor, should you ever be in a position where you’ve been injured in the workplace and it’s something that could have certainly been avoided. Speaking to someone like this can prove invaluable when you’re looking to get compensation or acknowledgement of fault for work-related injuries.

Right to fair pay and compensation

A right to fair pay and compensation is definitely something that you need. It’s therefore important that you know your rights in being paid according to the terms set out by the contract you signed and that you can receive compensation in cases where it’s necessary.

Again, seeking legal advice is always useful when you feel like you’ve been discriminated against or taken advantage of financially.

Right to grievance and disciplinary procedures

Not every employee has the best experience with a company, and vice versa, when it comes to the employer. However, regardless of what’s gone on, the employee has a right to grievance and disciplinary procedures. A fair and transparent process for any grievances that have been raised is important to ensure the rules are being followed correctly.

A right to statutory benefits

Every employee has the legal right to statutory benefits. Depending on where you work in the world, these might vary. The US, for example, includes social security, unemployment insurance, and workers’ compensation. For the UK, paternity care and sick pay are also something that are statutory benefits.

Be sure to check what statutory benefits you’re entitled to within the country you live and work in.

Understanding your rights as an employee is important so that you’re never taken advantage of. Make sure to do your due diligence and research anything you’re unsure about when it comes to your rights and responsibilities in the workplace. It’s important that you’re looked after regardless of where you work and who you work for.
