Wall Street bounced back Monday after last week’s technology-driven selloff, as easing geopolitical tensions and renewed buying in AI stocks lifted all three major indexes.
The S&P 500 climbed 1.2%, the Nasdaq surged 2.1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.6%, snapping a five-session losing streak for both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq.
The biggest catalyst was a sharp rebound in technology stocks.
After investors spent much of last week questioning whether massive AI investments would ever generate sufficient returns, buyers stepped back into many of the sector’s biggest names. Semiconductor stocks also recovered after Friday’s steep decline.
Another positive development came from the Middle East.
Markets welcomed reports that the United States and Iran are preparing to resume negotiations in Doha, reducing fears of further disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. While oil prices edged higher, investors viewed the diplomatic progress as a net positive for the global economy.
Outside of technology, Comcast rallied after announcing plans to separate its media assets from its broadband business, while SpaceX continued its remarkable run after news that it will soon join the Nasdaq-100 Index.
Today’s rally doesn’t necessarily mean last week’s concerns have disappeared.
Investors are still debating whether today’s extraordinary AI spending will ultimately generate equally extraordinary profits.
But Monday reminded us of another important investing lesson.
Markets rarely move in a straight line.
Even during powerful long-term bull markets, periods of fear are often followed by equally powerful rebounds.
Successful investors don’t react to every headline.
They stay focused on the long-term trend while accepting that volatility is simply part of the journey.
