Stop Monkeypox by accepting Personal Responsibility

Stop Monkeypox by taking personal responsibility

When I first heard monkeypox, I heard that it’s a virus that is spreading when men have sex with men.

As I heard this I ask myself this question. Why don’t they say gay men instead of saying “men who have sex with men”? I googled my question but I didn’t find a satisfying answer. Then I asked Twitter.

This is the response I got on Twitter:

A lot of MSM self-identify as straight.

Now, we heterosexual males are accused of having a small brains, so excuse my ignorance, but how is a man who has sex with another man not gay?

Away, changing the subject…

According to the CDC (Center for Diseases Control and Prevention) , “Monkeypox can spread to anyone through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact.”

Its interesting that the virus is spreading among gay man and not gay women. As far as I know, gay women also have a lot of skin-to-skin contact.

I read in Science magazine that according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) many of the gay man “attained by the virus, reported more than 10 sexual partners in the previous 3 months, and 44% reported group sex during the incubation period. Exactly how the virus is passed on is less clear.”

The public is asking the government to do more to stop the virus. But shouldn’t we also ask men who have have sex with men to be more responsible? When should an individual take personal responsibility? Why should we ask governments to spend billions of dollars and scientist/researchers to work long hour to find a solution when part of the solution is also to stop participating in group sex, at least for short period of time, in order to stop the virus from spreading.
