How To Make Your Physical Premises Safer

How To Make Your Physical Premises Safer

As a business, one of your priorities these days is to make your physical premises as safe as you can. It needs to pass all the regulatory and compliance requirements to avoid fines and possible legal action.

But how are you supposed to do this? What can you do to improve safety, reduce the risk of injuries, and generally keep your employees happy on the job?

Enhance Physical Security

The first thing you’ll want to do is take a look at the physical security of your premises. Is it actually safe

For example, do you have CCTV cameras in all the key areas, and parking lots that deter theft? Also, have you got any access control, like PIN codes and biometric systems?

Once you do that, you’ll want to secure the perimeter. Making your business a hard target for opportunists is a great way to reduce risks and keep people inside the building safe.

Improve Fire Safety

The next step is to focus on fire safety and ask whether you are doing everything you can in this area to keep people safe from harm on your property.

The best approach is to install alarms and extinguishers. For example, you should have smoke detectors in every room and CO detectors where required, like next to boilers. You also want fire blankets in the kitchens and extinguishers in multiple rooms, according to regulations.

If you think there are fire hazards, then try to eliminate them. For example, you could use a dry type transformer instead of one that relies on oil to cut down on potential flammability risk.

Enhance Lighting

Often overlooked, it is also a good idea to enhance the lighting on your premises. Getting this right can have a substantial impact on the number of trips, falls, slips, and other issues you face.

Interior lighting includes things like lighting up your hallways and putting down LED strips. These are handy when you want to prevent trips and other problems from emerging.

Exterior lighting is also a must-have if you want to keep people safe though (and it is something that a lot of businesses actually forget about when they shouldn’t). Put these lights in walkways and parking lots so that people don’t trip over curbs or other elements.

Inspect Equipment

Part of keeping your premises safe also involves inspecting any equipment you have on-site. This could be anything from robotic arms to kitchen kettles.

Therefore, always use a regular maintenance schedule for all your equipment. Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how frequently to maintain it. Don’t skimp on this as it can put your people at risk.

Also, keep your walkways clear. While it might sound simple, it is critical in an emergency situation where people need to exit the building promptly

Train Employees

Lastly, you can improve safety by training your employees and showing them what they need to do to remain safe if something goes wrong. Giving them various protocols to follow makes their response automatic when the emergency hits.
