How to benefit from the amazing power of twitter

Twitter

Do you feel like you are wasting your time in social media?

Do you feel like you are spending hours trying to get traffic to your website or business but you see very little results?

If all this sounds familiar, don’t worry, you are not the only one. This is very common. Here I want to share my experience and you can compare yourself with me and maybe take some of the lessons I have learned.

Before talking about twitter, I want to share my experience with other social media.

The rise and fall of Facebook

When Facebook came out, many of my dance students (I used to own a dance school) asked me to use Facebook. I resisted at first, but when I did, I saw my business grow by 25% to 50% in one year. Eventually, as Facebook became saturated, the benefit was minimal. Now, I don’t even look at Facebook anymore.

LinkedIn is great to build relationships but not traffic to your blog

Now I am a blogger and podcaster.

Because I was invited to a LinkedIn Local event, I started getting more involved with LinkedIn.

My participation has been daily, for the past three years or so I have, as of today, 4,440 connections. This sounds significant, but the impact on my blog and podcast is not a high as I would have hoped for.

I have met (face-to-face) some wonderful people on LinkedIn and I have made a little bit of money and gotten some followers to my website, but according to my statistics, the traffic going from LinkedIn to my website doesn’t compensate for my efforts.

I think one of the reasons is that LinkedIn discourages any posts where there is a link that may take people out of the platform.

Instagram drives no traffic to my blog

The value of Instagram in regards to my blog is practically zero. There is no traffic from Instagram to my website. To post something, I always have to go through the extra step of using my phone, and then, I am not able to put links on my posts. I feel that the best thing I could do is to delete my Instagram account, yet I am always afraid there is something I don’t understand yet and I leave the account active one more month.

For my blog, Twitter is the best social media, by far

I have decided to concentrate my social media effort on Twitter.

With Twitter, I can increase the number of followers in a slow and organic way or I can use the help of a Twitter follower bot to accelerate the growth of my audience.

I have 4,440 LinkedIn connections. I only have 400 Twitter followers, but the 400 Twitter followers bring 3 times as much traffic to my website as the 4,440 LinkedIn connections. This proves to me that I should spend more time on Twitter and less time on LinkedIn. Check out this screenshot.

Twitter is the top referrer

Things to consider when growing your twitter following

Your profile

I know it’s obvious, but it has to be said. Having a good profile is important to attract followers.

Your profile should have a clear photo of your face. Your bio should be clear and concise and it should describe the service or product you offer. If your profile is clear, you will get more of the followers you want.

Oh, and don’t forget to include your website address. Remember, you want them to visit your website.

If you can do something creative with your profile background, that’s a bonus. It will improve your branding and it will instill more confidence for people to follow you.

How to get more followers in Twitter

Produce content every day

Consistency is the name of the game.

If you show up every day, people will start noticing you and following you.

Some people tweet several times per day. That’s OK, but unless you are part of the media, with breaking news all the time, don’t overdo it.

Some people like to tweet something every hour, and they create fatigue on their followers. I unfollow people when their tweets overpopulate my twitter feed. Be careful using tools to populate your twitter feed. Over time, real people will have enough of you and leave and your only followers will be those who are not active.

Start following people

Look for leaders in the industry you are interested in. For example, I follow another podcaster, his name is James Altucher. He has 213.7K followers. Well, I can follow James and I can follow his followers. If those people follow James Altucher, maybe they would like to follow me as well.

Twitter allows me to follow up to 400 people per day.

Let’s say I make it a habit to follow 20 new people every day. If 10% of those people follow me back, then I am already creating a steady following.

If some of those people who you followed didn’t follow you back, go the next day, and unfollow them.

Inform your followers from other channels

Don’t feel shy to go to other social media channels where you already have some followers or connections and tell them that you are trying to increase your reach in Twitter and ask them to follow you back.

It’s all a numbers game. Many will ignore you, but some will respond. I had a positive response from my LinkedIn connections.

Daily engagement with your audience

When you see a comment you like, like it, or comment on it, or re-tweet it. By doing this, you will be supporting other people and other people will support you back.

Conclusion

The Twitter platform is the most friendly platform to promote your blog. With Facebook, you have to pay to play. With LinkedIn, the algorithm discourages posts with outside links. With Instagram, you are not even allowed to put your links. The only obvious platform is Twitter. In addition, Twitter uses, are not afraid to spend a few minutes outside of the platform to check out your blog.

Maybe the other platforms are great to promote your brand, but to promote your blog, Twitter is king.
