Life, Leadership, and Money Matters

What do you do if you are blessed with success?

blessed with success
Summer in Iceland

I have never felt so successful in my life.

  • I live in a free and democratic country (Canada) where people don’t get killed when there is a transition in government.
  • When I go into my apartment, I flick a switch with my finger and there is light, I turn my writs and there is water. This is amazing.
  • I live in a spacious apartment in an artistic neighborhood in Montreal.
  • I have a laptop computer, a cell phone, and access to the internet 24/7.
  • I love my job as a blogger/podcaster/YouTuber and I only work four hours per day. I have total autonomy over my time.
  • I got friends and family who I love and who love me back.

I feel a responsibility to deal with success in a positive manner.

Success is not spending my life in bars and restaurants watching life drift away. Destiny has given me a privilege and a responsibility to take the resources I have to my disposal and use it in a way that can create the highest amount of good for the biggest amount of people.

We have all have seen or heard about lottery winners, movie stars, and athletes who make millions of dollars and who go broke within a few years of their good fortune. Those people were not thinking for the benefit of others, they were thinking for themselves. They were not good stewards of their success, success is a responsibility.

Levels and responsibilities of success

Your level of responsibility varies in direct proportion to the level of success.

Small level of success

Let’s say you have a secondary education and a full-time job doing something you enjoy. Your family and friend love you. You are part of a middle-class family.

For citizens of other countries, your base level would be the top of the pyramid for them. Be grateful for what you have. Take your husband or wife to a restaurant from time to time, be kind to your neighbors, and donate a few dollars from time to time.

Higher level of success

Let’s say that you are upper-level management in a big corporation or the owner of a medium-sized business.

By this time you would have taken care of your closest family members. Your kids are going to reputable universities, you have some prestige or social recognition.

It’s time to help extended members of your family. Contribute to the education of your nieces or nephews. Make sure you help as many family members and friends as you can, without expecting anything in return.

Become more generous with non-for-profit organizations.

Top-level of success

What is success for if not to help others?

You are the CEO of corporation or the owner of very profitable business.

Find ways to help your local government. Finds ways to contribute to the community. You are a leader, create some kind of program that leaves a positive impact on the world.

How I am planning to use my success

Right now, I am at a level of success where I can sustain myself, put a little bit of money away in my retirement account, and occasionally I can invite my friends for dinner at my place or a restaurant. Also, I take a one week vacation every year.

In the future, when I earn a little bit of money, I would like to contribute to:

  • Maison de l’Amitie. They help immigrants integrate into the community and they teach language classes at a very low rate.
  • Donate bicycles. I believe that our city (Montreal) could become even more bicycle-friendly; it will reduce pollution and improve people’s health. I would like to donate bicycles to people who lack the funds.
  • Send free condoms to poor countries. I believe that one of the problems of this planet is overpopulation. While in industrialized countries population growth is close to zero, in non-industrialized countries, women are having from 5 to 10 children. Those children probably will never get the proper education, proper nutrition, and proper care. I think it’s a crime to bring children into humanity who most likely will live in poverty and despair for the rest of their lives.
  • Disseminate information about the nefarious effect of animal farming. I believe that we can alleviate climate change and improve our health by stop eating animals. Yes, many people swear never to stop eating meat, but some people can be persuaded if the right information is given to them. The meat industry spends millions of dollars promoting its cancerous and cruel products. I am sure that there are organizations out there that disseminate information about animal cruelty, how we don’t need to eat meat to have a healthy diet, and how eve can save the planet by polluting less.

And you? What would you do with your success. Please write one contribution in the comments below.

  1. I really appreciate your articles, Alain! This one really hits home. I also feel I am blessed with success but moreover, I feel blessed to live in a country like Canada.

So what would I go with success?
    1) Give back (which I do)
    2) Get involved (which I do)
    3) Run for office (which I’m taking the steps to do)

    1. If you ever run for any kind of civil service, I will be in line waiting to vote for your. 🙂
