How to become an Entrepreneur

Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship because I love you

If I love you with all my heart, I will ask you to become an entrepreneur. There is nothing more rewarding than creating something out of nothing.  One moment you have an idea, the next moment you have a product or service of value to someone else.

If I hate you with all my gut, I will ask you to become an entrepreneur. There is nothing more paralyzing than experiencing failure after failure, having your ideas rejected by the marketplace, living with the insecurity of not having a regular paycheck.

I am an entrepreneur

I am an entrepreneur!

I have always been an entrepreneur.

At first, it was not my choice, I was nudged into entrepreneurship.

The arrival in Canada

I came to Canada with the dream of being an employee. I wanted to work in a bank and climb the corporate ladder and after 40 years, earn my golden watch.

My failure as an employee

I will share three instances where I failed at being an employee.

  1. One of my first jobs was as a busboy. I was proud to have a job. One day, I asked my boss to rescheduled me because I had an exam at the University. My boss said “no,” and I quit.
  2. I used to work at a sandwich shop at a shopping center. At 5:00 am, I used to give the previous day’s sandwiches to the homeless. My boss found out about it and asked me to throw the food in the garbage, not to give it away. I had a hard time accepting that order and a few days later I quit.
  3. After graduation, I became a financial adviser. My boss used to encourage me to sell financial products which were not a good investment for our clients. After a few months, I quit.

Those instances and a few more made me realized that I didn’t have the temperament to be an employee.

My journey into entrepreneurship

After seen a dance teacher at a local bar, I decided that I was going to be a dance teacher. The only problem with that plan was that I didn’t know how to dance.  That was not a challenge. I started taking classes on Mondays and teaching the same class to my students on Fridays. Along the way, I got better and I have been able to sustain myself out of dancing for about 15 years.

6 years ago, I decided that I was going to become a real estate investor. I didn’t know anything about real estate, but today I have two rental properties that contribute toward my living expenses.

2 years ago, I decided to become a photographer. I didn’t know any photography. I bought a camera, I bought some advertisement and now I am starting my third year as a photographer and my business is growing.

One year ago, I decided to become a podcaster. I didn’t know anything about podcasting, but since then I have published 59 episodes, one thousand people listen to my voice every month and I have interviewed the most amazing individuals.

This year, I want to start a video production business, and yes, you guessed it. I don’t know anything about video. I feel optimistic that I will find a market for my service.

How does it feel to be an entrepreneur

But being an entrepreneur is the most incredible feeling. It’s the feeling of having an idea and making it possible. It’s creating something out of nothing, it’s a sense of satisfaction, it’s being an artist, it’s being in control of your own life.

But being an entrepreneur can be the most agonizing experience, it’s the uncertainty of not knowing if you will be able to pay your rent. It’s the pain of going from failure to failure, is the fear of comparison, fear of judgment, fear of failure. It’s the despair of losing your money, other people’s money, and your dignity.

Because I love you, become an entrepreneur

For me, there is no other option but to be an entrepreneur.

Dear friends, I love you… In spite of all the pain, insecurities, and despair, I encourage you to become an entrepreneur.
