Life, Leadership, and Money Matters

You can be an entrepreneur at any age

You can be an entrepreneur at any age

We hear stories about the 20-something entrepreneurs who created a business out of nothing (i.e. Makaylah, 22, skin care business), but we hardly hear about the 50-year-old entrepreneur who started a consulting firm. However, 40s and 50s-year-old entrepreneurs are excelling.

I want to highlight some examples of entrepreneurs in Montreal who have started their businesses after the age of 40.

I am 56 years old. At age 50 I started my photography business, and at age 53 I launched my website design business.

My dance partner Cheryl Williams, after 20 years working as a dance teacher, she is starting an English as a Second Language online school called “English With Cheryl.”

I officially started my business at 41. It came with a lot of life and work experience for sure! I have a Branding Agency that creates full brand development for my clients 😊 My website is 40thirtyonemarketing.com

I’m about to turn 43 and I’ve been running Completely Inclusive/Complètement Inclusif for 5 years now.

Advantages of starting a business at a later date

  1. The person has accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge and is ready to share that experience and knowledge with their clients.
  2. After a life of experimentation, they have discovered the profession in which they want to invest themselves. They are more likely to persevere and are more certain of what they want out of life and their business.

Tips for new entrepreneurs

  1. Never stop learning. Technology is changing everything every day. Entrepreneurs should never stop learning; it’s the only way to continue adding value to the services provided to future clients.
  2. Find a mentor. In entrepreneurship, there is always someone ahead of you, or someone willing to help you with the next step of your venture. Find that person and seek their guidance.
  3. Find a community. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey. If you find a community where you can share your failures and successes, you will be able to stay in the game longer and benefit from the 10-year overnight success.

If you live in the Montreal area, we invite you to join the community of Solopreneur Montreal, where we hold monthly meetings in order to support and encourage each other.
