Trump’s Speech to Congress: The Good, The Bad & The Controversial

Today, I want to talk about President Trump’s recent speech to the U.S. Congress on March 4, 2025. Now, I know Trump is a polarizing figure—he’s said a lot of things I don’t agree with, and some that I strongly oppose. But today, I want to focus on some of the key points from his speech that actually made sense to me. And of course, I’ll also touch on the parts that I find problematic. So, let’s dive in!

Things I Like About President Trump’s Speech

Meritocracy Matters

One thing that stood out to me was Trump’s emphasis on meritocracy—the idea that success should be based on talent, effort, and achievement rather than arbitrary factors like race, gender, or sexual orientation. When people are rewarded for their hard work and ability, society benefits as a whole. However, when preferential treatment overrides merit, it can erode trust in institutions and create unnecessary divisions. A strong economy and a fair society thrive when competence takes priority over identity.

Gender Identity & Social Clarity

Trump also spoke about recognizing only two genders—male and female. This is a viewpoint that aligns with biological realities and simplifies social, legal, and institutional frameworks. Having clear and widely accepted gender definitions helps in areas like healthcare, legal documentation, and competitive sports. While individuals should have the freedom to express themselves, a society functions more efficiently when it operates on clear, consistent categories.

Fairness in Women’s Sports

A point that resonated with me was his stance on keeping men out of women’s sports. The biological differences between men and women—such as muscle mass, bone density, and testosterone levels—give male athletes an undeniable advantage. Allowing men to compete in women’s categories undermines the integrity of female athletics and negates decades of progress. Protecting fair competition ensures that women have a level playing field to showcase their talent.

Curbing Illegal Immigration

Under Trump’s administration, illegal immigration has seen a sharp decline. In February 2025, the U.S. southern border recorded only 8,300 apprehensions per month, the lowest in decades. To put that number in context, under the Biden administration, U.S. border apprehensions reached as high as 250,000 per month. This was a complete capitulation of the border. The Biden administration not only dropped the ball—they seemed complicit. Stricter border policies and increased deportations have played a role in this reduction. This was one of the major reasons why ordinary citizens, who bear the consequences of illegal immigration, voted for President Trump.

A Nod to Elon Musk & Financial Reform

Trump also highlighted the importance of financial accountability and criticized government waste. He referenced Elon Musk’s vision of financial innovation and even suggested that governments worldwide could benefit from something like DOGE. I do believe Canada could use a financial shake-up to curb waste and inefficiency.

I would just mention three of the most ridiculous government spending eliminated by DOGE, although by this time there are hundreds of them.

  • $600,000 grant to study “menstrual cycles in transgender men”
  • $8,000,000 to promote LGBTQI+ initiatives in Lesotho.
  • $8,000,000 for making mice transgender
  • $10,000,000 for male circumcision in Mozambique

This is another reason why hard working families decided to vote for President Trump. When someone is struggling to pay rent and having a hard time putting food on the table, it’s hard to see their tax dollars being wasted in such an obscene manner.

Things I Dislike About Trump’s Leadership

Tariffs: A Costly Burden

As a Canadian, I hate tariffs—plain and simple. Trump’s 25% tariff on Canadian goods is frustrating, but at the same time, Canada also imposes high tariffs on products like dairy, poultry, and eggs. For example, butter tariffs can reach 300%! This kind of trade protectionism only results in higher prices for consumers. If we believe in free markets, we should strive to eliminate tariffs on both sides.

Trump’s Imperialistic Ambitions

The term “imperialistic ambitions” implies a nation’s desire to expand its power, influence, or territory, often through force, coercion, or political dominance. Trump has talked about making Canada the 51st state, taking back the Panama Canal, and taking over Greenland in one way or another. This is a topic that makes many people feel uncomfortable.

Conclusion

So there you have it—some things I liked about President Trump’s speech, and some things I strongly disagree with. Politics is never black and white, and while I can appreciate certain policies that promote fairness and efficiency, I also have to call out the issues that I believe are harmful.

From my point of view, many of the people who voted for President Trump don’t necessarily like him, but they oppose the woke policies taking over the country. Most people support meritocracy and are tired of gender identity debates—people can be whatever gender they want, but they don’t want those ideologies forced on the entire country. Most people also believe it’s unfair for men to compete in women’s sports. Finally, many felt that illegal immigration was out of control and that the streets were being overrun by gangs of criminal illegal aliens.

U.S-Mexico border apprehensions plummeted to 8,326 in February 2025, the lowest level in decades. From record highs to a border crossing ghost town, Trump’s policies are working, whether critics like it or not.
