Wall Street returned from the Independence Day holiday in a buying mood as investors piled back into semiconductor and artificial intelligence stocks, sending the major indexes higher.

The S&P 500 gained 0.7%, the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3% to another record closing high above 53,000.

Leading today’s rally was the semiconductor sector.

Broadcom climbed 3.7% after extending its long-term chip supply agreement with Apple through 2031. The news helped lift the entire semiconductor industry after last week’s volatility, suggesting investors remain confident that AI infrastructure spending will continue for years to come.

Another headline came from Microsoft, which announced approximately 4,800 job cuts as part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations. While layoffs often make headlines, investors generally viewed the move as another example of large technology companies focusing on efficiency while continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, oil prices eased after OPEC+ confirmed another production increase beginning next month. Lower energy prices helped keep inflation concerns in check and provided additional support for equities.

This week also marks the unofficial beginning of second-quarter earnings season.

Companies such as PepsiCo, Delta Air Lines, and several major financial institutions will report over the coming days. Investors will be looking for one thing above all else:

Can corporate earnings continue to justify today’s market valuations?

After months dominated by discussions of AI spending, the market is gradually returning to what ultimately matters most:

Revenue.

Profits.

Cash flow.

Technology may drive the headlines, but earnings determine stock prices over the long run.
