After running a podcast for several years, I’ve interviewed hundreds of business owners. One of my most common questions is this: How do you grow a small business?
Over the years, I’ve grown two businesses—my dance school and my hospitality business (i.e., managing several Airbnb properties). Now, I’m working on growing a third: my YouTube channel.
Here are some tips on how to grow your small business:
1. Build a Relationship with Your Clients
Your clients are your pot of gold, so why not give them the golden treatment?
When you show your clients that you care, they’ll do their best to stay with you. Loyal clients will often forgo a better deal if they know they’re your priority.
In my service businesses, client satisfaction was always the top priority. For my YouTube, it’s not about me—it’s about my viewers. I eliminate the fluff and deliver entertaining, inspirational, and educational content that they want.
2. Use Social Media as a Tool—Not the End Goal
The purpose of social media is to stay connected with your clients and provide them with value.
I see business owners fall into the social media trap of creating content just to feed the algorithm:
Use social media to share important updates and information about your products or services.
3. Be Consistent
“It takes 10 years to become an overnight success.” We’ve seen this play out countless times. A business grinds away for years, and suddenly, it’s hailed as an overnight sensation.
But there’s no shortcut. I wouldn’t be on the path to success without the ten years of hard work behind me.
With my YouTube channel, viewers know they’ll get a new episode every week. That consistency keeps them coming back—and helps the audience grow. Someday, someone will call it an overnight success, but we’ll know the truth.
4. Measure Your Progress
It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re hustling every day. Sometimes, all you can see is the long road ahead and the businesses that seem to be ahead of you.
But if you track your progress, you can look back and see how far you’ve actually come.
Measuring your growth keeps you motivated and focused on what truly matters: your long-term progress.
Conclusion
The biggest secret to growing your small business is loving what you do. If you truly enjoy your work, you’ll wake up every morning eager to learn, grow, and serve your clients better.
