Would you like to find a job in spite of the pandemic?

Marina Byezhanova. How to find a job

Since the beginning of Covid-19, thousands of people have lost their jobs. Many businesses have closed their doors. Some jobs will never come back. Is there any hope?

Today we are welcoming for the second time Marina Byezhanova.

Marina has more than 15 years’ experience in recruitment & more than 10 years as the Owner of Pronexia, a premiere boutique headhunting firm. She knows what it takes to stand out in the job market, how to find a job in a thought market, and how to shine.

Marina is also a public speaker, giving talks at conferences or leading workshops all over the world. Finally, she is a university instructor at Concordia University.

Marina incorporated her business in 2010, after the previous financial turmoil, so this is not the first time that Marina is facing a severe downturn in the market. Throughout her career she has helped thousands of people find their dream job.

As markets have shifted and corporations are no longer hiring, Marina has pivoted, as many entrepreneurs do. With the desire to help individuals find a job and improve their personal brand, Marina rolled up her sleeves and started coaching people to improve their resume, upgrade their social media presence, and show them how to ace an interview.

With more than 10 years as a corporate recruiter, she has all the tools necessary and the know-how to help individuals who are struggling to find a job.

Now, more than ever, job seekers cannot relay on job advertisements. 80% of the positions are being filled without being advertised. For those jobs that are advertised, there is an excessive amount of applicants applying for the same position. Some extra help in the form of coaching will help increase the probability of being hired.

Marina’s tips to help candidates gain an edge while looking for a job

  1. Define your UVP (Unique Value Proposition). Candidates hate this question: “What makes you unique? Why should we hire you and no someone else?” As an interviewee, you have to be ready for this question. As an interviewee, you have to convince, persuade, and remove any doubts.
  2. Brand yourself into the ideal candidate via the CV and online presence (LinkedIn).
  3. Develop a networking strategy.
  4. Research companies and find information so that they will be better prepared for the interview.
  5. Practice mock interviews and respond to awkward or unusual questions.

How do to deal with hiring discrimination again ethnic groups and women

Unfortunately, in a tight labor market, it’s difficult to fight against discrimination. Employers publish reports on how they are in favor of employment opportunities, but behind closed doors, they discriminate against race, religions, gender, age, and handicap people.

How to stand out on LinkedIn?

  1. Identify what makes you a unique candidate.
  2. Use the banner on your profile to communicate your brand.
  3. Make the “About” session an unmistakable description of you. Avoid general terms that could be applied to everyone else.

How to measure ROI on social media

  1. Identify the goal. Is it brand awareness? Is it leads?
  2. Create metrics to measure those goals.
  3. Evaluate.

I love her tip number 3: Develop a networking strategy. I think that a lot of people are still overwhelmed by the idea of reaching out to their networks and have no idea where to start. This can be a huge missed opportunity for job searchers since a lot of hiring decisions are made with preference given to people who are already close to the company. You have to be a familiar face and not just another one of 600+ job virtual applications.

    1. Great stuff.
I am not looking for a job, but I love networking. I used to go to a networking even called LinkedIn Local Montreal. I was a great place to do business and create friendships.

      1. Now I network mostly from my LinkedIn platform. I reach out and say hello. Nothing crazy, just a comment or two. It feels good to connect with people.
