The Australian pop singer Betty Who, who has long identified as queer, recently revealed on the podcast Made It Out that she is now in a relationship with a man.
And OMG—parts of the queer community absolutely exploded with outrage.
The backlash, particularly from some corners of the lesbian community, accused Betty Who of lesbophobia and of reinforcing harmful tropes about queer identities. What was meant as an honest, personal reflection turned into a firestorm of online criticism.
Let’s first listen to what she said in the interview, and then we’ll take a look at the backlash.
Why the Outrage?
As society evolves, more people are experimenting with, redefining, or discovering their sexuality. To me, Betty Who’s story is simply one person sharing her journey:
- One day she likes girls.
- The next day she likes boys.
- That’s her personal reality.
In today’s era of sexual liberation, that doesn’t sound like headline-breaking news. Yet, the reaction from some in the queer community has been fierce—and honestly, a bit hilarious.
Was It Really Lesbophobia?
Betty Who has been accused of being lesbophobic. Personally, I don’t think that label fits. She was speaking openly and candidly about her identity and the changes in her life. There’s no indication she was trying to insult or erase anyone.
A week later, she even issued an apology for her comments—though I wonder if that was truly necessary.
A Storm in a Teacup?
Here’s my take:
Our society has become so prosperous and comfortable that, now that many of us no longer struggle daily for food or shelter, we create big storms in teacups.
Instead of worrying about survival, we agonize over pronouns, labels, and someone else’s love life. These debates become our new battlegrounds—our new triumphs and defeats.
But is this really progress, or are we just getting lost in the noise?
What Do You Think?
So, I’ll throw the question back to you:
👉 Do you think this is a non-story blown out of proportion, or do you see it as a serious issue for the queer community?
