5 Signs It’s Time for a Fresh Start: How to Navigate the Waters of Divorce

Divorce is something that no one expects when it comes to getting married to who they believe to be their life partner. However, a lot of things can happen within a relationship whether it’s falling out of love, having children and struggling to remain together or cheating occurs.

If you’re wondering whether it’s time for a fresh start, then here are five signs that you’ll want to divorce your partner rather than stay together any longer.

  1. Unreasonable behavior is occurring regularly

There are often some things that happen within a relationship, especially when married, that would be unreasonable and abnormal behavior. For example, if your partner is becoming emotionally abusive or physically abuse, it’s important for your own safety to get out as soon as you can.

Unreasonable behavior could also come in the form of financial recklessness, to cheating on your spouse. This type of behavior wouldn’t typically happen in your marriage if everything was perfectly fine. If there are any signs of this unreasonable behavior, then this could be a red flag for you to walk away now.

  1. Emotional disconnection and a lack of intimacy

Emotional disconnection is certainly a sign that something isn’t quite right and that you might want to address this with therapy for example.

If there’s a lack of intimacy, then for some people, that might be the thing that hammers the nail into the coffin even without anything else that might also be going on in the relationship.

That emotional disconnection is a big one to have missing, especially from a marriage.

  1. Recognizing you’re on different paths

Just like falling in love can happen to anyone, it’s also useful to know that even when married, your lives can take a different path than the ones expected.

If you’re seeing life from a different viewpoint to your spouse, then it might be time to sit down and discuss whether you can co-exist and continue the marriage on these different paths, or whether it’s time to split and take time to work on those different routes you’re taking. Maybe you’ll come back together at some point later down the line?

  1. Thinking about divorce and life without your partner

If you’re already thinking about getting a divorce lawyer, then chances are, you’ve thought about life without your partner already. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but that’s something that can often be a sign that you’ve already checked out before admitting it to your spouse.

  1. Going to therapy and not seeing any improvement

Finally, therapy is a great way to address problems in the marriage and it’s certainly something that can be beneficial for some couples. However, if you’re not seeing any improvement, then going to therapy might not even fix what’s broken.

While this is not the be-all and end-all to the signs, nor is it enough reason to warrant a divorce in some cases, it’s good to look at these and consider whether any of these are something you identify with. If so, then you might want to look at starting divorce proceedings and sitting down with your partner to discuss the next steps.
