039 Julian Haber, A Field Guide for Freelancers

I met Julian Haber about 10 years ago. I was his Salsa teacher. At that time he was already a well-established photographer.

Julian has been a photographer for 15 years.  His experience as a gig economy worker led him to write Gigonomics: A Field Guide for Freelancers in the Gig Economy.

Julian Haber feels that the media and politicians portrait the gig economy in an unfavorable light and for him, working as a freelancer, has been a very positive experience that he wants to share.

Julian was on track to having the typical 9 to 5 cubical lifestyle. He had an MBA and he worked in the corporate environment for about 3 years, and he quickly realized that the normal 9 to 5 life was not for him.

During his time as an employee, Julian took photography as a hobby. After a while, he started to exhibit his photos, and eventually, he started taking clients, photographing small weddings, cocktail parties, and other events.

Julian’s employment contract was terminated and Julian found himself without a job. This was the opportunity that Julian took to become a freelance photographer. His income took a big drop. He went from having a good salary with benefits to having no salary, no benefits. Fortunately, he got laid off with a package and his wife was supportive and had a steady job.

In order to promote his business as a photographer, Julian started blogging. It was this regular practice of blogging which allowed him to develop the skill of writing. As the years passed by and with the changes in society in regards to the gig economy, Julian figured that he has been gigging for 15 years and that the would like to share his experience in the form of a book.

The first part of the book is about defining the gig economy. The second part is about how to get started. The third session is about how to think like a freelancer. Part four is about how to promote yourself as a freelancer. Part five is about staying interested in your gig.
