079 Dora Gamaoun, Becoming a Portfolio Manager

Dora Gamaoun is a young immigrant from Tunisia. She used to spend her summer days on the beach, working on her suntan.

However,  she felt that she needed a bigger challenge. She wanted to study, work, and travel. In a way, she was influenced by movies and TV shows that portrayed a busy lifestyle.

Dora Gamaoun got a scholarship at HEC (Haut Studes Commerciales) in Montreal and got a master’s degree in Financial Engineering, and in addition, she is a Certified Financial Analyst charter holder.

After graduation, she got a job as a portfolio manager, then senior analyst, and now portfolio manager managing $4 Billion dollars.

Thank you, Dora, for sharing your experience with me.  I think Dora’s experience is remarkable because it has nothing that can not be replicated. An immigrant comes to Canada, as millions of immigrants come to Canada or to the US. Studies hard, learns a new language like many immigrants do, Dora, speaks Arabic, French, and English. She graduates, Makes many job applications, finds a good job, gets an additional certificate, gets promoted, and gets to work in a field that she loves.

There is nothing remarkable in this story, nothing that cannot be replicated, yet there are millions of people who are working on a career they don’t like. They feel stock yet stay stock.

Look at what Dora did, she had her masters and yet went for another certification to make herself more valuable. This certification took her at least 3 additional years of studies.

Imagine a cashier at Walmart, working at a low salary. If this cashier, don’t do any additional training, five years she will still be a cashier, working for a low salary. And then, she and millions like her will blame Walmart, will blame the system, will blame their circumstances. But at a given moment we have to take control of our actions and take responsibility for the outcome.

I hope Dora’s example inspires you to go after a career that you like, be the best employee you can be, and get additional education and certificates, and you will achieve professional success. It’s not difficult. You just have to want to do it.
