059 How to avoid losing our jobs to Robots, AI, and Automation? Darrell West

The Future of work by Darrell WestAre you at risk of losing your job to Robots, AI, or Automation? If so, this episode is for you. Our guest today is Professor Darrell West and we will talk about his new book, the future of work.

Professor Darrell West an author, political scientist, and political commentator. He has written about technology policy, mass media, campaigns, and elections in the United States.

Ever since the industrial revolution, technology has been creating and destroying jobs at a rapid pace.

At one time in history, most of the North American economy depended on agriculture, today, less than 2% of jobs depend on agriculture.

One hundred years ago, we could have never imagined the diversity of jobs that we have today, and today we can not imagine the kind of jobs that will be available one hundred years from now.

This time is different. Robots, AI, and Automation will take our jobs

Professor Darrell West contends that this time is different.

  • It’s not just one technology that’s disrupting the job market. It’s 10, 15 or 20 different technologies coming in at the same time.
  • Robots, Autonomous vehicles, Artificial intelligence, Stores without retail clerks.

Books discussed in the episode

Brain Gain: Rethinking U.S. Immigration Policy, about the positive influence of immigrants to the United States

Billionaires: Reflections on the Upper Crust, about the influence of billionaires in the political system.

The Future of Work: Robots, AI, and Automation, about how we will lose our jobs to Robots, AI, and Automation.

I am more optimistic about the future of work than Professor Darrel West

  1. I agree with professor West, We all should be on a track of continuous education. We should strive to learn more. Not only for financial reasons but for mental and emotional well-being.
  2. I am more optimistic that professor West about the future of work. I believe that there will always be work available to anyone who is interested in working. First of all, we should look at work from a global perspective, and realize that the last few decades have created more jobs than ever before in history and millions and millions of people all over the world continue getting out of poverty. I am optimistic enough to believe that this trend will continue.
  3. On the topic of income inequality. I don’t see anything wrong with it. If we look at many of our millionaires, they are mostly self-made. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, the Google boys (Larry Page and Sergey Brin). These millionaires made their fortune from zero. I don’t think governments should be in the business of taking it away. All of us have access to supercomputers in our pockets, we have access to all the major universities in the world, for free, we have incredible means of communication. If some people excel and make a fortune out of the same tools that are available to all of us, good for them. I congratulate them, we should congratulate them. Those people have created millions of jobs. They have become rich because they have created a product or service that most of us are happy to pay for.
