How to survive as a gig worker: Gigonomics by Julian Haber

I have known Julian Haber for over 10 years. He was taking dance classes at our dance school Dance Dance Conmigo then I discovered that he was a photographer as well.

GigonomicsWe lost touch, and then I discovered through social media that he wrote a book, Gigonomics A Field Guide for Freelancers in the Gig Economy.

I was skeptical at first. He’s my friend and I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I also know how difficult is to write a book, and how much more difficult it’s to make it entertaining.

The first thing that surprised me was the quality of the writing. How he kept the writing easy to follow, how he was humble and didn’t portrait as an expert, as a guru who would show us the way. He spoke about his challenges and mistakes and the lesson he is still learning.

Gigonomics is a mix of tactics to become (or continue being) a freelancer, and emotional support to keep us going on times of uncertainty.

The book was unusually long for a business book. Most business books are short of 300 pages. This one was 392 pages. Although I found most of the information insightful and valuable, there was one sub-chapter where I felt he went a bit too long.

Overall, whether you are already a freelancer, or are thinking about getting started in freelancing, I assure you that this book is worth your time.

Learning how to get gigs — the economic reality in the gig economy — is the new survival skill of our times.

Technological change is a disruptive force, and many jobs today are changing or disappearing entirely.

Freelancers who can adapt and respond to the new opportunities being created will emerge as winners in this new gig economy. But how do you become a freelancer? There’s no university degree in freelancing, and jumping in cold can be exhilarating but also disorienting

Thank you, Julian, for your great work.
