115 Erika Toth, CFA, Director at BMO ETFs. We talk about ETF investing

Erika Toth, CFA, is the director of ETFs at Bank of Montreal. She helps investors and financial advisers navigate through the diversity and complexity of the ETF palette; what’s the primary purpose of each ETF, and who is the ideal investor for each one of them.

You can find Bank of Montreal’s ETFs offering here. And you can thank Erika for the information she shared here.

Erika’s dream was to be a famous hockey player, then a rock star, but eventually she gravitated towards finance.

She started working at BMO (Bank of Montreal) nine years ago. She pursued all the needed to climb on the field of finance, in particular the CFA (Charter Financial Analyst), the Canadian Securities Course, and a few other ones.

Presently, Erika specializes in ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds), which is basically a mutual fund that trades in the stock exchange.

In the beginning, ETFs were passive investment vehicles following a major market index like the Toronto Stock Exchange, the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Average, etc. But later on, other kinds of funds were added such as “Smart Beta” funds and full-blown actively managed funds.

BMO has been offering ETFs to its clients since the summer of 2009. To my astonishment, ETFs were created in Canada. The first ETF was created about 30 years ago. In Canada, the ETF industry has 204 billion dollars in terms of assets under management.
